The latest Mercedes-Benz model to receive a facelift is the GLK. Unveiled at the New York Auto Show, the rival to the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Land Rover Freelander is to receive several cosmetic changes and a revamped engine lineup. Say hello to the Mercedes GLK 2013.

The new GLK will continue the aesthetic theme of the current Mercedes-Benz model range with angular lines and a muscular presence easily distinguishable from the retiring model by its new front bumper fascia that includes revised fog-lights and LED infused headlights. These revisions continue through to the rear lights and wheels.

Engine wise, the versions of the entry model GLK 220 – the CDI 4Matic BlueEfficiency and BlueTec 4Matic – will be joined by the GLK 250 BlueTec 4Matic. A twin-turbocharged diesel, it pushes out 201 bhp and 369 lb ft of torque providing an engine that satisfies buyers looking for both performance and economy while widening the previously sparse engine choices. As before, the GLK 350 will be the range-topping model with it now producing 302bhp and reaching 60mph in 6.5 seconds.

Although due to be on sale this August in existing markets, the UK will once again be denied the pleasure of this latest GLK. This is due to a cost cutting decision made during the GLK’s development that meant its four-wheel drive system was engineered exclusively for left-hand drive. However, Mercedes-Benz have suggested that this will be made possible with the introduction of the second generation model due in 2015 and already under development.
