New Google Chrome OS

Google has announced they are developing an operating system for PCs, and in particular aimed at netbooks. The Chrome OS could be pre-installed on hardware as early as the middle of 2010.

The Open Source system, will pitch itsefl directly against Linux which currently runs on the majority of netbooks, though the penguin has already seen its slice fall since XP started appearing on netbooks.

“We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds,” said the blog post written by Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Google’s engineering director Linus Upson.

“We are completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates.

“It should just work,” said Google.

No viruses, malware or security updates? Unless it is going to be left turned off, in a dark foam filled room with no external connections that is a rather big statement!

You may be thinking, hang on, isn’t this just Android? And you would be in the same boat as thousands of others posing this question. Though Google claim this OS is all about the web, and designed for PC’s and netbooks, not smartphones like Android’s primary goal.

This is a real kick in the teeth for Microsoft, who after the failings of Vista were hoping Windows 7 (their latest OS for release this year) would pull them back to the forefront of OS technology and release.
